West Ham left it until injury time but eventually sneaked through to the last 16 of the Carling Cup tonight. Plymouth looked like taking the game onto extra time when Ashton struck in the 92nd minute. Both teams had wasted chances to win the game before then. Ebanks-Blake had several chances for Argyle and Neill had to clear a Barry Hayles effort off the line. for the Hammers, Boa Morte missed the best chance of the first half whilst Bowyer put a header wide from close range after coming on as a sub. Scott Parker played 87 minutes in his first start for the club which will have pleased gaffer Alan Curbishley. Collins and Gabbiadon took the centre half berths whilst Ljungberg and Boa Morte played on either flank. Curbishley had previously stated that this was a competition West Ham could win and he picked a strong side - though Carlton Cole made another start. Overall a successful night even if it was frustrating for long periods for the home support. Let's hope we avoid the big guns in the fifth round. |
