Group A consists of hosts Qatar, neighbours Kuwait, China and 1994 Asian Games champions Uzbekistan. Qatar failed to get past the group stage when they last hosted the tournament in 1988 and will be hoping to avoid a repeat in 2011.
Group B has two three time champions in the form of Saudi Arabia and Japan, with Jordan and Syria completing the numbers. Saudi Arabia were also the runners up in the last edition of the tournament that was won by Iraq.
Group C is easily the toughest group in the tournament. It pits South Korea, Australia, Bahrain and India against each other. South Korea and Australia both appeared at the 2010 World Cup and performed creditably, while Bahrain were just a step away from qualifying for the tournament, losing in the intercontinental playoffs to New Zealand.
Defending champions Iraq are in Group D along with fierce local rivals Iran, North Korea and the United Arab Emirates. North Korea, who were surprise qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup, are making their first appearance in the tournament since 1992. Iran have always performed consistently in this tournament and are tied for the most number of wins along with Saudi Arabia and Japan. 1996 champions UAE, coached by Srecko Katanec, can prove to be a handful on their day.
