Community Shield Live
Every year the Community Shield is put on by the Football Association and is often seen as the opener to the best of English football. It is usually dominated by the winning teams from the FA Cup and the Premier League and it is a very exciting event that gets football fans all over the world excited for the upcoming season. The community shield has been put on for more than 100 years and was first put together in 1908. In that first year the Queens Park Rangers battled it out with Manchester United. While the event has gone through a number of format changes in the past 100 years, the tradition is still existent and it has become a staple of the football season. The event used to be called the Charity Shield but was changed to Community Shield in 2002, and has been called by that name since.
When the event first came about it was seen as an unimportant end to the season that did not hold much weight. Now it has changed to an opener for the season and is taken quite seriously by football fans and the top football teams alike. Teams still use it at as a very competitive friendly and considering they are allowed 5 substitutions the managers is it to their advantage to try up different looks and combinations.
For some time the tournament was seen as being cursed in a way as the winning teams went on to go through some major disappointment after the event. In the 1990`s the team that won the Shield never managed to win the English Premier League. From 1997 all the way to 2005 no team could win the title but Chelsea put an end to that streak in 2005-2006. In that year the team won both the Community Shield and the Premier league title, and would love to do the same thing this year.
The 2009 Community Shield will see the winners from last year, Manchester United, take on Chelsea who recently won the FA Cup. The same two teams battled it out in the event in 2007 as Manchester United was able to win on penalties. It will be one of the first times that Manchester United will take the field without superstar Christiano Ronaldo. Throughout history the Manchester United-Chelsea games have always had a bit of flavour and should do so this year as well.
