The Socceroos routed Uzbekistan 6-0 in the semifinals to set up a title clash with the Japanese. Sasa Ognenovski, Carl Valeri and Robbie Kruse netted their first goals in Australian colours as Holger Osieck’s charges crushed their Central Asian opponents. The other scorers for Australia that evening were Galatasaray’s Harry Kewell, Blackpool’s David Carney and Blackburn’s Brett Emerton.
Japan beat South Korea on penalties in the semifinals. The Japanese went behind when Ki-Sung Yeung scored for Korea, but the Blue Samurai rallied back through Ryoichi Maeda and Hajime Hosogai to lead 2-1 going into the final minute of extra time. A dramatic late equaliser from South Korea’s Hwang Jae-Won sent the game to penalties, where Japan held their cool to prevail 3-0 in the shootout.
