The Saudis, finalists at the previous edition of the Asian Cup, slumped to a shock loss against Syria in their group opener. A goal for Abdulrazak Al Husein on either side on the lemon break sealed the Green Falcons’ fate in Al Rayyan.

Saudi Arabia’s only goal of the game came from Taiser Al Jassim on the hour mark. After the defeat, the Saudi Football Federation immediately sacked Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro and replaced him with Nasser Al Johar, who had taken the Gulf nation to the finals of the 2000 tournament.

Jordan came almighty close to causing an upset against Japan but were denied all three points by Maya Yoshida’s stoppage time equaliser. Jordan had taken a shock lead against the Japanese just before half time through Hasan Abdel Fattah.
