Qatar are coached by Bruno Metsu, who guided Senegal to an unexpected spot in the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup. The team will be keen to wipe the memories of their poor performances at the 2003 and 2007 editions of the Asian Cup, where they exited at the group stage on both occasions without securing a single win.

Qatar’s last competitive game was against North Korea, which they lost 1-0. The winner was scored from the spot in the second half by Korean substitute Ryang Yong Gi. Qatar’s squad for this tournament almost entirely consists of players from Qatari clubs, with Zamalek forward Hussein Yasser being the lone exception.

Uzbekistan did better than Qatar at the 2007 edition by progressing to the quarterfinals where they were eliminated by eventual runners up Saudi Arabia. This tournament is the first major test for new Uzbek coach Vadim Abramov, who took over from Mirjalol Qosimov last year.
