Syria upset Saudi Arabia 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament, thus leading to the latter sacking their manager Jose Peseiro. The Syrians took the lead through Abdelrazaq Al-Hussain eight minutes before the interval. His effort from the edge box took a deflection off Abdullah Shuhail, thus deceiving Waleed Abdullah in the Saudi goal.
Saudi Arabia equalised a quarter of an hour into the second half through Taisser Al Jassim but the Green Falcons’ joy was short lived as Al-Hussain restored Syria’s lead soon after. Like it was with the previous goal, a deflection off a Saudi player worked to the advantage of the Syrians.
Hassan Abdel Fattah’s left footed drive put Jordan ahead against Japan and they managed to retain their lead until the last seconds of the game, when Maya Yoshida nodded in a cross from Makoto Hasebe.
