The United Arab Emirates created plenty of opportunities against North Korea in their group opener, but paid for not being able to apply the final touch as they could only draw 0-0. It could have even been a case of no points instead of one for Srecko Katanec’s men had Hong Yong-Jo not missed an early spot kick for the North Koreans.

A goalkeeping error from Mohammed Kassid saw Iraq lose their first game of the tournament 2-1 to Iran. The Lions took the lead through skipper Younis Mahmoud but their opponents equalised before half time through Gholam Reza Rezai. Six minutes from time, Kassid misjudged a free kick from Imam Mobali that allowed the latter to score the winning goal for Iran.
