Angola are in Group A along with Mali, Malawi and Algeria, and many pundits feel that the Palancas Negras stand a great chance of progressing if they win their group opener. Algeria are expected to top the group, while Malawi are expected to be the whipping boys, leaving Angola and Mali to fight it out for the second qualifying spot.

Angola’s last international friendly was against Gambia. Ebrinma Sawaneh gave Gambia the lead in the 4^th minute, but Manucho equalised on 29 minutes for the Black Antelopes. In 2009, Angola only managed to win twice under new coach Manuel Jose- against Togo and Malta. But they also drew against the likes of Ghana and Senegal- an indication that the team is starting to progress.

Mali qualified for AFCON by virtue of their third placed finish in Group D in qualifying. They finished four points behind Ghana and one behind Benin. Les Aigles probably have the strongest midfield on paper in the tournament. The likes of Mahamadou Diarra, Seydou Keita and Mohamed Sissoko will operate in the centre of the park and could make life very difficult for Angola. Upfront Frederic Kanoute will provide their main attacking threat.

Mali’s last three games have ended in one win, one draw and one defeat. They beat Iran 2-1, drew 0-0 against Qatar and lost 1-0 to Egypt in their most recent fixture. Egypt were made to work hard for their victory and the Pharaohs were also aided by a penalty miss from Mali’s Abdoulaye Traore.
