Gyan Asamoah’s 21st minute header from a Kwadwo Asamoah corner proved to be enough for the Black Stars to cut the flight of the Super Eagles in the last four. It was Ghana’s third straight 1-0 win in the tournament, coming on the heels of similar one goal victories over Burkina Faso and hosts Angola.
The inexperience of the Black Stars did show in the semifinal as they allowed Nigeria to dominate the game, but some excellent keeping from Wigan keeper Richard Kingston combined with poor finishing from Nigeria’s forwards allowed Ghana to progress to their first AFCON final since 1992.
Egypt took bitter rivals Algeria to the cleaners on Thursday evening. The Pharaohs crushed the Desert Foxes 4-0 to reassert their status as undisputed kings of North African football. A first half penalty from Hosni Abd Rabou and second half strikes from Mohamed Zidan, Mohamed Abdel-Shaffy and the impressive Mohamed Nagy Gedo gave Hassan Shehata’s men a comfortable 4-0 win.
To add insult to injury, Algerian keeper Faouzi Chaouchi and defenders Nadir Belhadj and Rafik Halliche were sent off in the game as Les Fennecs finished the game with eight men on the pitch. Egypt’s Emad Moteab suffered a hamstring injury in the game and is a doubt for the final.
