Ghana face Togo in the second game in the “Group of Death” at Estadio Chimandela at Cabinda. With Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso also in the group jostling for a quarter final spot, a win for either side would be as precious as gold dust. Will the Sparrow Hawks eclipse the Brazil of Africa? Milovan Rajevac’s men are one of the favourites to lift the championship but their recent form has been woeful. Ghana have failed to secure a win in their last six international games and have only managed draws in recent friendlies against Angola and Mali.

Rajevac has made some bold decisions with regard to his 23 member squad. There is no place for Inter midfielder Sulley Ali Muntari. Also, Stephen Appiah has been left out as he would not have recovered from injury in time for the tournament. In the absence of these senior players, the burden will be on Chelsea’s Michael Essien, appointed skipper for this tournament, to lead from the front. Gyan Asamoah will spearhead the attack and he will have support from Ghanaian U-21 star Dominic Adiyiah who plays for AC Milan.

Having narrowly missed out on the World Cup, Togo have a lot to prove at the 2010 ACN. Frenchman Hubert Velud has been appointed coach after Belgian Jean Thissen was dismissed for trying to manufacture a move to rivals Cameroon. Togo were unconvincing in qualifying and even lost 0-4 to Swaziland at one stage.

The main threat to Ghana’s defence will be posed by Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor. Supporting ‘Manu’ in attack will be Thomas Dossevi of Nantes and Jonathan Ayite of Nimes. AS Monaco midfielder Serge Gapke will hold the key to unlock Ghana’s defence with his through balls and dribbles.
