The Desert Foxes of Algeria will start as huge favourites when they meet minnows Malawi in Group A at the Estadio 11 de Novembro in Luanda. Join us today at Ole Ole Football and watch Malawi v Algeria on your computer.
Algeria matched the highs of the 1980’s when the beat bitter rivals Egypt in a play-off at Khartoum to secure their passage into the 2010 World Cup. Now, Rabah Saadane’s men would be looking at ACN 2010 as a perfect rehearsal for their main act in South Africa in six months time.
Scoring goals has been a big problem for Algeria. They have been defensively compact and lightning on the break with their full-backs but have drawn blanks against the likes of Rwanda, Liberia and Gambia at various stages of qualification. The goal-scoring duties will be with Al-Khor’s Rafik Saifi and Siena’s Abelkader Ghezzal. The attackers will be ably supported by a strong midfield which consists of Wolfsburg star Karim Ziani, Pompey’s Hasan Yebda, Karim Matmour and Mourad Meghni. Rangers star Madjid Bougherra, the holder of the Algerian Player of the Year award, will be a critical figure at the heart of Algeria’s defence.
Of all the teams participating in the competition, Malawi have the least experience. They last appeared at the ACN in 1984 and failed to progress beyond the first round. It will be difficult for the Flames to clear the first hurdle.
Most of Malawi’s players play in the local leagues and in South Africa and they have a very able local manager in Kinnah Phiri. 27-year old forward Essau Kanyenda who scored a hat-trick in qualification will be Malawi’s major hope for a goal or two. Skipper Peter Mponda, who plays for Black Leopards in South Africa, will be the key to organising Malawi’s defence.
On paper, it will be very difficult for Malawi to get anything out of this tie, but football, as know, is a funny game. Watch live streaming of Algeria vs Malawi and other AFCON games!!! Sign up today.
