Mali lie at the bottom of Group A with just one draw from two games. Mali were considered as strong contenders to qualify from this group but now have left themselves an uphill task. They will qualify only if they defeat Malawi and the Angola-Algeria game does not end in a draw. If Mali fail to secure a win, it would end their 2010 CAN campaign.
Mali were woeful in attack against Algeria. Their best player Frederic Kanoute was brought on only in the second half and did not start the game. Coach Stephen Keshi favoured Yatabare and Diaye over the Sevilla star but neither could impact the game. Bakary Soumare and Mahamadou Diarra find themselves suspended for this game after having picked up two yellow cards.
Malawi have given themselves a golden chance of qualifying after defeating the mighty Algerians in their first game. The Flames will qualify if they defeat Mali. If Malawi manage to draw this game against Mali and Angola avoid defeat to Algeria, Malawi will still go through. A loss would however mean elimination from the 2010 CAN.
Essau Kanyenda missed a couple of glaring chances against Angola. Russell Mwafulirwa who scored Malawi’s first goal in the tournament did not feature against Angola and could be brought back into the line-up. Goalkeeper Swadick Sanudi will have a crucial role to play between the sticks as a clean sheet would be vital against Mali.
