Nigeria lost to Ghana thanks to Gyan Asamoah’s third goal of CAN 2010. The Rennes striker was unmarked at the near post and headed in Kwadwo Asamoah’s corner in the 21st minute. After that it was all one way traffic with the Super Eagles pressing for the equaliser. But wasteful finishing combined with Richard Kingston’s heroics in goal denied Nigeria a place in the finals. Obafemi Martins was the main culprit missing two gilt edged chances. Chinedu Obasi and Yakubu who came on as a second half substitute were thwarted by Kingston on numerous occasions.
The third place game against Algeria could see Shaibu Amodu give starts to Seyi Olofinjana and Kalu Uche. Both of them have been left on the bench after starting the first few games. Onyekachi Apam will be in contention for a starting spot after serving his suspension.
Les Fennecs got a harsh dose of reality as they were thumped 0-4 by an inspired Egypt team. Algeria finished the game with eight men on the pitch and were outclassed by Hassan Shehata’s men in Benguela.
Faouzi Chaouchi, Nadir Belhadj and Rafik Halliche all received their marching orders against the Pharaohs. The trio are therefore ineligible to feature in the third place playoff. Scoring goals has been a big problem for Les Fennecs, just as it has been for the Super Eagles. Both the teams’ strikers will need to get their scoring boots back on.
