Nigeria managed to beat Benin 1-0 on Saturday, thereby keeping coach Amodu's job safe. The decisive moment of the game came close to half time when Benin's Romauld Boco handled Peter Odemwingie's header in the box. Referee Helder Martins de Carvalho pointed to the spot, and Super Eagles striker Yakubu sent in a low shot to make it 1-0. It was by no means a powerful effort from the Everton forward, but once opposition keeper Rachad Chitou had guessed wrong, there was no way his shot was going to be stopped from going in.
Nigeria simply need to avoid defeat against Mozambique. That result will see the Super Eagles qualify behind Egypt and make the result of the Benin-Egypt game immaterial.
Mozambique tried hard against Egypt on Saturday, but eventually went down 2-0 to the Pharaohs. It was Egypt's 15th straight game without a loss since 2004. Defender Dario Khan's own goal, his second in as many games, allowed Egypt to take the lead. Khan diverted Ahmed Fathi's cross past his own keeper.
However there was little Mozambique could do about the second goal scored by Mohamed Nagy Geddo. The forward expertly controlled Ahmed Hassan's pass, turned and blasted the ball into the top of keeper Kapango's net. It was the 26 year old's second goal of the tournament.
Nigeria have looked shaky at times in this tournament and the Mambas will be hoping to use this to their advantage. Sign up today and watch Nigeria vs. Mozambique live on your computer.
