The exciting 2009 Amsterdam Tournament will get underway on Friday with an exciting match up between Sunderland and the powerful Portuguese team, Benfica. Sign up now with OleOleFootball and start immediately enjoying live Amsterdam Tournament action today.
This will be the first time that Sunderland takes part in the Amsterdam Tournament as they received an invite only after Arsenal, the defending champions, pulled out of the event last minute. Over the past four years the event has been won by an English team and Sunderland would love nothing more than to keep that tradition alive.
So far on the season the Black Cats have won both of their pre season games. In their first match the manhandled Darlington by a score of 4-0 thanks to promising play from the likes of Paul McShane, Roy O’Donovan and Kieran Richardson. After that they were able to squeak through with a victory against Porimonense from Portugal by a score of 1-0 in a tight match.
Benfica will be heading into the tournament after already winning one trophy so far in the pre-season. They were able to walk away as the winners of the Guadiana tournament after a thrilling 2-1 victory in the finals against Olhanense. The got through thanks to goals from Oscar Cardozo and Miguel Vitor. Before that tournament they were also able to play well in their other friendles and have yet to lose in the pre-season so far. There is a likely chance that this team could raise the trophy when this tournament is all said and done.
It will be very intriguing to see if Benfica can keep their solid play alive or if last minute invites Sunderland can grab a hold of the trophy. You can tune in and see which team can pull it out in the Amsterdam Cup by sticking right here on OleOleFootball.
