Both West Ham and Beijing Guoan were unable to start of their Asia Trophy 2009 experience on the right foot and will not face off in a third place match on Friday July 31^st. Each team will be looking to scrounge a bit of hope in the tournament and another loss would be quite damaging to their confidence heading into the real season come August.

West Ham was downed by Tottenham in a 1-0 game, but they were completely outplayed and outclassed. They were barely able to hold onto the ball and only came away with one real scoring chance when Luis Jiminez almost came away with a goal on a nice pass from Carlton Cole. They will need to pick up the pace in the game against Beijing or they will be leaving the Asia Trophy tournament without a win.

Beijing is hosting the tournament but could not please the home crowd fans in a very tightly contested contest against Hull city. They managed to play pretty well and fight back and force penalties, but fell just short. Paul Modibo managed to squeak a cross from the right side into the net in the second half to level the game at 1-1. The hosts were controlling the play and got a number of chances but could not put anything away. They will need to improve their finishing if they want to capture third place.
