The fourth round of this season’s Carling Cup continues on Wednesday evening with the clash between two of the Premier League’s heavyweights in Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium in North London. Although on paper this clash can be billed as the clash of the titans, in reality we may see something completely different. The reason for this is in the fact that both managers, Arsene Wenger of Arsenal and Rafa Benitez of Liverpool tend to play weakened teams in the Carling Cup as they view this as the lesser of all competitions they enter and hence, the least important. Arsene Wenger especially has always used the competition to play youngsters, whereas Rafa Benitez normally selects fringe players, for the early rounds at least. It will, nevertheless, be interesting to see what teams the two managers put out on Wednesday evening.

The two teams enjoyed conflicting contrasts in the Premier league over the weekend. Arsenal travelled to London rivals West Ham on Sunday and could only manage a 2-2 draw, whereas Liverpool silenced many critics over their recent mini-slump with a fantastic 2-0 home win over reigning champions Manchester United.

Despite going 2-0 up at Upton Park, Wenger’s side were eventually pegged back to 2-2 by the home side, who, it has to be said, could have gone on to win the game had they not had a player sent off ten minutes from time. Liverpool, for their part, totally dominated Man United with Fernando Torres and French youngster Ngog scoring the goals.
