The Carling Cup has traditionally been very low on Arsenal’s radar and this is borne out with the fact that they have only ever won the competition twice before, the last time being in 1993 when they beat (then) high flying Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at the old Wembley Stadium. As a consequence they have now slipped to ninth in the league with six points from four games played.
For their part, West Brom have adapted well to life in the Championship following their relegation last season and losing manager Tony Mowbray in the summer to Celtic. As of writing they currently lead the way in the division with seventeen points from seven games. In the last round of the carling Cup they defeated Rotherham 4-3 at home after extra time.
