After a miserable start to the campaign, the Gunners will be hoping for success in domestic cup competitions when they host Wigan over the midweek round of matches in the Carling Cup.
A defeat to Stoke put the Gunners six points adrift of the top of the Premiership charts and they certainly look like a team on the verge of exploding. Arsenal have now lost three times in the league against the likes of Fulham, Hull City and Stoke and will need to add consistency to their game if they are to challenge for silverware this season. However, one competition, which they will be looking at, is the Carling Cup. Arsenal have done well in recent years reaching the finals two years ago and capturing a semi-final berth last season losing out 5-1 to Tottenham Hotspurs. Victory here will take them one step closer to their goal and given their proficiency, they can relied to do the honours over the midweek against Wigan.
Wigan on the other hand, will see this cup as a viable way of pushing up into European places. The JJB outfit reached the finals in the 2005/06 edition where they were defeated by Manchester United and having gone that far, they will be hoping to emulate that this time around. Wigan possesses a strong spine and definitely look to be a side that can cause the Gunners some damage. The likes of Zaki and Heskey up front form a formidable duo and with Arsenal’s defence faltering in recent times, expect Wigan to have some joy on the counters against the Gunners.
