Gerard Houllier’s villa side will play host to Sam Allardyce’s Blackburn Rovers in the third round of the Carling Cup. With a mixed bag of results so far this season, Blackburn will be looking to pick up a win, not only to progress to the next round but to build some momentum in their 2010/2011 campaign. With a poor start to this year’s campaign, Aston Villa will be hoping to progress to the next round in front of their home fans at Villa Park. Aston Villa’s starting eleven will likely be made up of Dunne, Warnock, Stiliyan Petrov and goal scorer of the only goal for villa against Stoke City, midfielder Stewart Downing. John Carew may also get time on the pitch if deemed fit enough to play.

Recent goal scorer for Blackburn Rovers against Manchester City; Kalinic, may play alongside El-Hadji Diouf and could prove essential for Blackburn Rovers to progress further in the competition. Midfielder Morten Pedersen is also likely to start as well as defender, Christopher Samba. With both sides with a mixture of results at the start of this season, it can prove to be a relatively close match. See the outcome with live streaming from oleolefootball.watchlive.net.

Martin O’Neill’s Villa, whose last major trophy was the 1996 League Cup, lead 1-0 from the first leg at Ewood Park. That priceless goal was scored by winger James Milner. Villa have history on their side- the last team to progress to the final after losing the first leg was Arsenal over two decades ago.

Villa drew 0-0 with West Ham in their weekend Premier League game. They are currently sixth in the table with 36 points, two behind Tottenham Hotspur, who currently occupy fourth place. Midfielder Nigel Reo Coker missed the stalemate against the Hammers with an ankle injury and this game is also likely to come too soon for him.

Blackburn claimed a very welcome victory when they beat Fulham 2-0 on Sunday. Goals in either half from Chris Samba and New Zealand skipper Ryan Nelsen gave the Lancashire outfit only their sixth win this season. South African striker Benni McCarthy had a hand in both goals. Rovers moved to 12th place as a result of the win, thereby moving five points clear of the relegation dogfight.

Blackburn's performance in the first leg, especially the first half, left much to be desired. Allardyce asked Nikola Kalinic to play alone upfront and the Croat cut a frustrated figure as James Collins and Richard Dunne combined to outwit him time and again. However they did improve in the second leg and will have to build on that performance if they are to beat Villa and set up a final meeting with either Man City or Man United.
