Reigning Carling Cup holders Manchester United held off the challenge of fellow Premier league team Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round, with the game finishing 1-0 to United at Old Trafford. Despite a valiant effort from Mick McCarthy’s men, they couldn’t see off a united side that played for sixty minutes of the game with ten players due to the sending off of youngster Fabio Da Silva.

Danny Welbeck eventually scored the goal that saw Sir Alex Ferguson’s team progress into the next round when he netted in the 66^th minute of the contest. For their trip to Oakwell on Tuesday evening, Sir Alex is sure to rotate his team, playing a few youngsters and fringe players so that they can get some much needed match practise.

It should be pointed out that United go into the match against Barnsley on Tuesday evening following a Sunday battle Royale against arch rivals Liverpool in the Premier League, the result of which is not yet known at the time of writing this preview.

For their part, Championship side Barnsley go into the match against Manchester United not enjoying the best of seasons in the league. They currently occupy twentieth position in the league table (prior to the weekend's game, the result of which is unknown at this present time).
