The carling Cup third round continues this coming Tuesday evening and it has thrown up an intriguing all Premier league tie with Bolton Wanderers hosting West Ham United for the right of passage through to the fourth round. Both teams would love a crack at winning this trophy as it has a guaranteed Europa League spot up for grabs for the winners, and with European places becoming very hard to come by for the more, with all due respect to these two teams, moderate sides in the Premier league, the Carling Cup becomes more of a better proposition for all involved.

Both teams have made a rather lacklustre start to the new Premiership season. As of writing this article the weekend's league results are unknown, but prior to that we find the Hammers sitting in thirteenth position with four points from four games, while Bolton are in eighteenth with three points from four games.

Neither of these teams have ever won this competition, but they have both graced the final twice before; West Ham in 1966 and 1981 and Bolton more recently in 1995 and 2004 (where they lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff).

In the last round Bolton had to travel to Liverpool to face Tranmere Rovers and eventually ran out winners 1-0 thanks to a Davis goal just before half time. West Ham passage was more controversial with the now infamous 3-1 win over Millwall after extra time. The game was highlighted by serious crowd disturbances in the stadium as well as rioting outside in the streets.
