Both Hull and Everton have made very disappointing starts to the current premier league season, with both currently residing in the bottom four (this article was written before the weekend's league results are known). Hull are in seventeenth and Everton in nineteenth and the respective managers, Phil Brown and David Moyes will know that this is just not good enough, especially as both teams started well last season.

Hull’s last game prior to this weekend's matches was a 4-1 drubbing at Sunderland, while Everton lost 2-1 at Fulham. David Moyes team have had a Europa League game to play since, beating AEK Athens at Goodison Park with a comprehensive 4-1 score line.

Everton had a bye to this round of the competition, but Hull City progressed thanks to a 3-1 home win against Southend. Rather surprisingly considering the success they have enjoyed over the years, Everton have never won the Carling Cup or League Cup in any of its incarnations. They have appeared in the final on two occasions in the past though, but you have to go way back for that – 1977 and 1984. For their part, Hull have never been to the final before.
