Newcastle share top spot in the Championship with fellow relegated team and north-east rivals Middlesbrough, only trailing on goal difference. Bearing in mind the off-field turmoil that has surrounded the club for the most part of the summer they have started the season in fine fettle. Last Saturday they travelled down to South London to play Crystal palace, and came away with a good 2-0 victory. Both goals were scored in the first half of the contest – Nolan in just the second minute and Taylor in the 21st cementing the victory for the magpies.
With Chris Hughton maintaining responsibility as caretaker manager until the club has sorted itself, the team seem to be settling down and enjoying live in the second tier of English football. Obviously, the main aim is to bounce straight back to the Premier league, which the Geordie faithful maintain is their rightful place. There is a lot of football to be played before that can happen though and the players now have to focus their thoughts for Wednesday’s Carling Cup match.
Huddersfield travel to Newcastle on the back of a 1-0 away defeat to Bristol rovers on Saturday, a result that meant the team have now dropped to seventh in the League One table with seven points, five behind current leaders Charlton. In the first round of the Carling Cup they beat Stockport 3-1 at home.
