The fourth round of this season’s Carling Cup has thrown up an intriguing tie between two of this season’s high flyers in the Premier league. Sunderland are enjoying their best ever start to a Premier league season under new boss Steve Bruce. Before the weekend's games they were sitting proudly in seventh position with sixteen points, just six off the top. In the previous round of the Carling Cup, Sunderland enjoyed a good 2-0 home win against fellow premier league side...Birmingham. Two goals in the first half from Henderson and Campbell was enough to see off the challenge of the Midlanders.

Aston Villa are currently one place above Sunderland in the Premier League table, although both teams are on the same points total of sixteen. Martin O’Neill’s side are also enjoying a good season, despite losing some key players during the summer; most notably Gareth Barry to moneybags Manchester City. In the previous round of the competition they despatched Cardiff City with a 1-0 win at Villa Park.
