Swansea have never beaten Wigan on the road in domestic competition. The last meeting between the two sides in a competitive fixture came in January 2001, when both teams used to compete in League One. Wigan won the fixture 2-0.

Swansea and Wigan also share a common link in the form of manager Roberto Martinez, who used to coach the Swans before beginning his stint at the DW Stadium. Martinez, once a hero among Swansea fans, is reviled by many at the Liberty Stadium and is expected to get a frosty reception from the visiting set of supporters.

Neither Swansea nor Wigan managed to make it past the second round of the tournament last season. In the 2008-09 season, both teams reached the fourth round before being knocked out by Watford and Arsenal respectively.
