Milan got the better of Marseille on Matchday 1 as they overpowered the French giants 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome. With home support and qualification on the horizon, Milan would be favourites going into the tie against Didier Deschamps’s men.

Milan are seven points behind leaders Inter in the domestic league but have recovered from a horror start to win four of their last five league games. They haven’t been able to secure a win at the San Siro in the Champions League this season, losing to FC Zurich and drawing against Real Madrid. Brazilian ace Ronaldinho recovered from a bout of flu and put in a sterling performance against Cagliari on the weekend. He, along with compatriot Alexandre Pato will form the core of Milan’s attack. Coach Leonardo could be tempted to give a start to the evergreen Filippo Inzaghi, who scored a brace against Marseille on Matchday 1. Milan would sorely miss the services of Gennaro Gattuso in midfield.

Marseille find themselves seventh in a very highly competitive Ligue 1 season , but are only four points behind the leaders with a game in hand. A win against bitter rivals PSG at the weekend has provided a much needed boost ahead of this tie. Marseille’s win against Zurich on Matchday 3 was their first win after six successive away defeats in Champions League games. They will be hoping to build on the Zurich win.
