After a not so impressive performance at the Estadio do Dragao, Arsenal will be counting on home support to take them through to the next round of the Champions League when they host FC Porto in the second leg of their knockout tie on Tuesday night. Porto won the first leg 2-1 at home. Silvestre Varela, who made his debut for Portugal last week against China, put the hosts ahead in the 11th minute. Arsenal replied through Sol Campbell’s 18th minute strike but Porto regained their lead after the interval through Colombian forward Radamel Falcao.
The goal was shrouded in controversy as referee Martin Hansson awarded Porto an indirect free kick in the box after Gunners keeper Fabianski had picked up Campbell’s back pass. Ruben Micael took it almost immediately and Falcao slotted home as Arsenal were caught napping. William Gallas is a doubt for this clash but Arsenal will have playmaker Andrei Arshavin back.

Arsenal have started the season in buccaneering fashion with four wins in five matches in the league. The Gunners have a fabulous mixture of youth and experience and despite losing the likes of Helb and Flamini to rival outfits, they still have enough quality to upsurge the very best in Europe. Arsenal come into this fixture on the back of a brilliant 6-0 victory over Sheffield United in the league where the likes of Diaby and Denilson really came to their own. However, things are much different in Europe where they barely managed to escape with a draw in their first match against Dynamo Kiev. A 1-1 draw was the best that could offer and with Porto looking to run in behind them, the Gunners will be hoping to break the shackles with a win over Porto this midweek.
Porto have a rather unsavoury record on English soil with defeats in all their previous clashes. Porto have lost to Chelsea twice and Liverpool in their last three visits to England and they will be hoping to plug this run with a strong performance against the Gunners. However, the Portuguese champions are a much weaker side with Quaresma securing a move to Inter Milan and given Arsenal’s form at the moment, it will take a special performance from Porto if they are to come away with even a point from the Emirates.
