Celtic qualified for this play-off game by defeating Russian side Dinamo Moscow. The Russians won 1-0 at Parkhead in the first leg, courtesy of a goal from 18 year-old Alexander Kokorin. The Hoops came back with a brilliant second leg performance, to defeat Dinamo 2-0 in Moscow. Goals from Scott McDonald and a last-gasp winner from striker Georgios Samaras were enough to send the Scots through.
Celtic have strengthened their squad this summer with the signings of Nancy pair Marc-Antoine Fortune and Landry N’Guemo and also Coventry full-back Daniel Fox. They also have a new boss in the shape of ex-player Tony Mombray. The new boss managed new striker Fortune at West Brom in the Premier League last season.
Arsenal qualified for this play-off game by finishing fourth in the Premier League last season. They had a slow start to last season’s league campaign, but finished with a flourish. A good pre-season has saw expectations at the Emirates rise for the new season, despite the exits of key players Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City. Unlike last season, the Gunners have key Russian playmaker Andrey Arshavin available in this year’s competition and his presence is essential for Arsenal’s chances of success.
