Liverpool travel to Budapest to take on Hungarian side Debrecen knowing that anything less than three points would mean a premature end to their Champions League campaign for the season. Will Steven Gerrard and co. rise to the occasion? Watch live coverage of Liverpool vs Debrecen on your desktop and find out.
Liverpool’s place in the top four of English football is under severe threat. They only managed a 2-2 draw at home to Manchester City and must win in Hungary to keep qualification hopes alive. But it will not be easy against a spirited home team who are looking for their first points in the competition.
Liverpool will be sorely missing the services of their top marksman Fernando Torres. Ryan Babel and Daniel Agger were substituted against Manchester City and face a race against time to be fit for the contest. But Yossi Benayoun, Albert Riera, Glen Johnson and Alberto Aquilani are expected to be fit to take their place in the Liverpool squad.
The game represents Debrecen’s last chance to impress in front of their home crowd. They lie fifth in the Hungarian League and in all probability won’t qualify for next year’s competition. Hence, a point at home against Liverpool will do them a world of good after having lost 0-4 and 3-4 in their first two home games against Lyon and Fiorentina respectively.
Star striker Gergely Rudolf who has scored twice in the campaign will pose a constant threat to the Liverpool defence. Lazlo Bodnar is the only Debrecen player to have played against Liverpool before when he played for Dynamo Kviv against the Reds in 2001/02. Apart from them, Debrecen don’t really have enough quality in their squad to trouble Liverpool.
