Skipper Hannu Tihinen’s cheeky backheeled goal was the difference between Zurich and Leonardo’s AC Milan at the San Siro. The result infused new life into Zurich’s campaign, and there is real hope among the club’s supporters that they can progress into the next round at the expense of bigger clubs like Milan and Marseille.
Zurich crushed Locarno 7-0 in the Swiss Cup on Saturday. Guadeloupian forward Alexandre Alphonse netted a brace, with Johan Vonlanthen, Marco Schonbachler, Xavier Margairaz, Adrian Nikci and Almen Abdi also scoring for Bernard Challandes’ side.
Marseille sit at the bottom of Group C after having lost both their opening games. They were beaten 3-0 by star studded Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Match Day 2. After the loss to Madrid, they were also beaten by AS Monaco, but the international break brought about a change in their fortunes as they beat Nancy 3-0 on Saturday.
Mathieu Valbuena opened the scoring for OM on five minutes, converting Mamadou Niang’s cross from the left. Brazilian Brandao made it 2-0 thirteen minutes from time with a low left footed shot as Nancy were caught on the counter. Fabrice Abriel collected Bakari Kone’s pass three minutes later and fired past Damien Gregorini to make it 3-0 to OM. Souleymane Diawara is suspended for Marseille after being sent off in the Real Madrid game.
