Darren Bent scored the only goal of the game, and a controversial one at that as Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool were stunned by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Bent’s shot hit a stray balloon before going in, but much to Liverpool’s dismay, referee Mike Jones allowed the goal to stand. The result dented Liverpool’s title hopes further and also saw Sunderland overtake last season’s runners up in the league table. Liverpool were without skipper Steven Gerrard and top scorer Fernando Torres in the Sunderland game.

Liverpool put in a sub standard performance on Match Day 2 as they were shocked 2-0 by Cesare Prandelli’s Fiorentina in Italy. Rafa Benitez ranted at his players at the lemon break but it had no impact as the score line remained the same even after the interval.

Lyon suffered their first league defeat of the season as they went down 2-0 at Stade Gerland to Sochaux. Goals in either half from Jacques Faty and Slovan Privat gave Sochaux three priceless points on Saturday night.

Lyon currently lead Group E with six points from two games after a fine 4-0 win on Match Day 2 in Hungary. Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom opened the scoring in the 3^rd minute, volleying home Miralem Pjanic’s cross. Pjanic himself doubled OL’s lead with a well taken 13^th minute free kick. Lyon scored another before the interval, and Bafetimbi Gomis struck a fourth in the second half to complete a convincing win.
