Manchester United defeated Inter Milan 2-0 on aggregate in the last round, drawing at the Italian champions before winning 2-0 at Old Trafford through goals from Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo. Sir Alex Fergusons side have an impressive record against Portuguese sides in the Champions League, winning the last four games and scoring 10 goals. United suffered a shock defeat to Jose Mourinho’s Porto in 2004 and the Portuguese side went on to lift the trophy for the first time in the clubs history. Despite that defeat the home side will be overwhelming favourites for this tie.
Sir Alex Ferguson will have Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes all available, after the trio missed the home game against Aston Villa through suspension. Gary Neville could also start after making a return to the first team in recent weeks. Midfielder Anderson is a doubt though, after picking up a thigh strain on international duty with Brazil, Wes Brown and Rafael Da Silva are also both still on the sidelines with long term injuries.
FC Porto made it through to the quarter finals with a victory over Spanish side Atletico Madrid, drawing 2-2 in Spain and going through on away goals after a goalless draw at home. This tie will be more difficult for Jesualdo Ferreira’s side though. Porto have face English sides 12 times in the Champions League and only won three times and losing six. The Porto side know it will be a hard task to beat the European champions, but go into this game top of the Liga Sagres.
Porto have a talented squad of players, including Argentine international midfielder Lucho Gonzalez, who is the clubs top scorer with nine goals in all competitions. Another player to watch out for is highly rated Brazilian striker Hulk, who has scored eight goals in competitions.
