Rangers are without a win in their four games, having just two points to show for their efforts. On Match day four, Lee McCulloch scored with an emphatic 79th-minute drive against Unirea only to see Marius Onofras equalise for the hosts, denying Rangers their first win in the group. When both these teams met on Matchday one, they fought out a 1-1 draw. Pavel Pogrebnyak put Stuttgart in the lead but Madjid Bougherra rescued a point for the Scots with a late header. A draw at Ibrox will do neither team any good.
Rangers have a pretty long injury list. Da Marcus Beasley, Pedro Mendes, Kirk Bradfoot and Maurice Edu will not be able to take the field. Andrew Little and Steven Smith were on the bench at the weekend and could feature in the tie. Kevin Thompson also returned to action against Dundee in a closed-doors friendly. Bougherra is likely to return to the starting XI unless Walter Smith decides to persist with youngster Danny Wilson.
Stuttgart are stuttering domestically and actually find themselves in the relegation zone with thirteen games played in the season. An exit from Europe’s top competition could prove to be a blessing in disguise for Markus Babbel’s men. They haven’t won in their last five league games and have scored in only two. And to make matters worse, they have a pretty long injury list too.
German defender Serdar Tasci has been ruled out for the rest of 2009 with a stress fracture. Also out with a similar ailment is Sami Khedira. Stuttgart are also without Martin Lanig, Cacau, Ricardo Osorio, Christian Träsch and Ciprian Marica.
