Villarreal progressed to this stage by beating Greek side Panathinaikos 3-2 on aggregate in the last round. The first leg at El Madrigal was drawn 1-1, which gave the Greek side the advantage of an away goal. The second leg in Athens ended 2-1 in favour of the Yellow Submarine, thanks to goals from Ariel Ibagaza and Joseba Llorente. Villarreal have drawn five out of the six games they have played in the Champions League against English opponents and they were also beaten by Celtic in the group stages.

Villarreal have emerged as one of the new forces of Spanish football in recent years, not quite at the level of Barcelona or Real Madrid yet but are not too far away. The Yellow Submarine as they are known, look set to clinch a place in the Champions League next season yet again. They currently sit 4^th in La Liga five points clear of their nearest rivals Atletico Madrid. In Giuseppe Rossi and Fernando Llorente they have a talented strike force capable of causing any defence problems.

Arsenal progressed to the quarter finals by beating Roma in the last round. Arsenal won the first leg 1-0 at the Emirates, only to be beaten 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico, with the Gunners winning the tie on penalties. Arsenal have only ever met Villarreal once in the Champions League, beating them 1-0 on aggregate in the 2006 semi finals and progressing to the final.

Arsenal have several first players returning to the team after injuries, these players include Emmanuel Adebayor and England star Theo Walcott, who have both missed a large portion of the season.
