Canada remained undefeated so far in the 2009 Gold Cup and won another game in the same fashion as their first one. On Tuesday night, the Canadian team once again relied on strong goalkeeping from Greg Sutton and a goal from striker Ali Gerba. In a lot of ways the game looked like a repeat of their earlier victory over Jamaica. The Canadians defence smothered Costa Rica for the entire second half and did not even allow a decent scoring chance for the last 30 minutes of play. While much of the credit for the victory has to go to Sutton and the defence, it should also be noted that Gerba is carrying the time with his fifth goal in just four games and his 15th goal over the last 26 matches. The team is now 2-0 on the tournament and only need a tie with Costa Rica to ensure a spot in this year’s quarterfinals.
Costa Rica also came up with a victory on Tuesday night but have still yet to show any real signs of life in the tournament. After losing their first game they just barely got by a short handed Jamaican team by a score of 1-0. The Costa Ricans managed to score in the 64th minute thanks to an impressive play from Celso Borges and were able to hold off the Jamaican team that was playing with just 10 men, thanks to an early red card. Costa Rica now has three points on the tournament, to match up against Canada’s six. They will need to come up quick and grab a victory to try and catch up to the jump start Canadian team.
