Canada and Jamaica will start of their tournaments in the Gold Cup with a game that will take place on Friday July 3rd. Canada has had its fair share of success with the tournament as they have qualified nine times for the Gold Cup. The year 2000 was a huge year for the Canadian team as they captured the Cup by stunning Mexico in extra time, casting aside Trinidad and Tobago and eclipsing Colombia in the finals. Their most recent success came in 2007 when they made it all the way to the semi-finals, but lost to the USA in penalty kicks. However this Gold Cup success has not turned into international success as Canada has been unable to qualify for the last six World Cups. They will be in for a big test as they face a powerful Jamaican team in their first game of the tournament. While it is just the first game, a loss would be devastating to the team’s hopes of advancing deep into the tournament.

Jamaica was unable to qualify for the Gold Cup in 2007 but turned things around this year led by their new coach Theodore Whitmore and star Luton Shelton. Jamaica’s most successful football year came in 1998 when they first qualified for the FIFA World Cup. On the Gold Cup stage Jamaica’s proudest moment came when they placed third in the 1993 tournament. They will be looking to prove themselves worthy of being in the tournament, and have a chip on their shoulder after failing to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
