The 2009 Gold Cup has turned out in much the same way that many other people expected before the tournament began. The top four teams in the qualifying for the 2010 World Cup have qualified for the semi-finals in the Gold Cup and will be looking to solidify their spot in the biggest event in football. If qualifying ended today for the World Cup then Costa Rica, the U.S and Honduras would all qualify while Mexico would need to head to a playoff.
The Ticos have been on quite a roll in World Cup Qualifying and have won three straight games but have not been able to come up with as spectacular play in the Gold Cup. That is because their roster looks a lot different than their World Cup roster as they went with a much younger team for the Gold Cup. They moved into the semi-final match thanks to a dominating 5-1 match up with Guadeloupe in Texas this past weekend.
Mexico has defeated Costa Rica before in qualifying but the Ticos should still be the favorites heading into the game as they have a lot to prove to their fans and the media. However Mexico is not going to lie down by any means as they are would love to get another Gold Cup championship under their belt. Another win for Mexico would also help them move ahead in qualifying for the World Cup. The Mexican squad is unbeaten in 4 games and are looking to keep that streak alive for as long as they can.
No matter the outcome the game should be a classic match starring two teams with a lot to prove. Thanks to OleOleFootball you do not have to miss a moment of the beautiful game that will take place on Friday, July 24th.
