Jamaica and El Salvador are both in a lot of trouble early on in the Gold Cup 2009 tournament. While both teams were looking to make a splash, have an impact and move onto the quarterfinals, they both risk being left in the dust. With Canada improving to 2-0 and Costa Rica at 1-1, it looks like the tournament might be over early for both these teams.
After losing 1-0 to Canada the Jamaicans were once again shut out, this time at the hands of Costa Rica. They have been unable to get on the scoreboard as of yet and had to play over half of their last match a man short. Rudolph Austin received a red card early on in the game and the Jamaicans could not get much started offensively after that. Goaltender Donovan Ricketts has been a bright spot for the team, but that has been about it.
El Salvador on the other hand could not get past Canada’s defense and were put down by a score of 1-0. It was a devastating loss for El Salvador as they were looking to move onto the next round with a victory. After stunning Costa Rica in their first game, they were looking to easily slip past the Canadian team but it was just not meant to be. They had a number of chances early on in the game from players like Manuel Salazar and Salvador Correas, but they were completely shut down for the second half.
A loss for either team on Friday July 10th should mean the end of the tournament for them. Jamaica will definitely flunk out of the tournament with a loss while El Salvador needs a win, coupled with a Costa Rica win and a lot of luck. Be sure to tune in right here on OleOleFootball to watch both teams pull out all the stops in a desperate attempt to keep their Gold Cup hopes alive.
