The team from Guadeloupe has been a pleasant surprise so far in the 2009 Gold Cup. Even though they were undermanned and beaten by a strong Mexican team in their last match of the round robin the Gwada Boyz still managed to move into the quarterfinals of the tournament. They have combined some strong offensive play along with some stifling defense to shut down some of the top teams and prove that they deserve a spot in this year's tournament. Guadeloupe would love nothing more than to take down Costa Rica on Sunday, July 19th and move onto the semi-finals of the tournament. It would be a major step for the small island and help them assert themselves as a promising football nation.

Costa Rica came into the Gold Cup tournament as an early favorite but did not find it easy to move into the quarterfinals. They fell behind Canada in their group and could not claim top spot as they were expected. Even though they were unable to play at their best or win every one of their games, Costa Rica was able to score when it mattered most and move into the quarterfinals.

There is no doubt that Costa Rica will be the favorites in their Gold Cup quarterfinal match but it will be no walk in the park. Guadeloupe has shown that they are an up and coming football power and are ready to take it to the next level. Costa Rica just barely managed to squeak into the game and only compiled 4 points in their group. They will need to turn things around quickly and maybe the week long break will be enough to get their game back to the elite level.
