The Gwada Boyz from Guadeloupe have proven that they can hang with the best teams out there and have already clinched a birth in the Gold Cup quarterfinals. However they would still like nothing more than to keep things going and put up the powerhouse team from Mexico. Another loss for Mexico would in all likelihood end their tournament for them and leave the team from Guadeloupe as one of the favorites moving into the quarterfinals.
Guadeloupe clinched their birth in the next round as they cast aside the team from Nicaragua and thanks to Mexico being unable to overtake Panama in their game that tied 1-1. The Mexico-Panama game was a scrappy one to say the least as two players were ejected, Mexican manager Javier Aguirre was ejected and the fans tossed cups and merchandise onto the field. Things boiled over when Aguirre apparently kicked Ricardo Phillips. Phillips pushed back and the Mexican bench erupted. The chaos took away from the actual game and the implications that came from it.
Guadeloupe had a far less intense match up with Nicaragua as they coasted to a 2-0 win and proved that they are one of the teams to beat this year. Aurelien Capoue set up both of the goals for Guadeloupe and Stephane Auvray and Ludovic Gotin were able to stroke the ball into the back of the net.
Guadeloupe will be looking for revenge against Mexico as Mexico is the team that eliminated them two years ago. They would love nothing more than to do return the favour in this year’s Gold Cup, and you can watch them try to impose their will live, right here thanks to OleOleFootball on Sunday, July 12th.
