Mexico and Panama were both big favorites to make it a long way in the 2009 Gold Cup tournament. However, the tournament did not start out that way for Panama as they were upset by Guadeloupe in their first game. On the other hand, Mexico came out flying and easily managed to put away an inexperienced team from Nicaragua and continue to pave their way to Gold Cup success. With a victory on Thursday, July 9th Mexico can push their way to the top of their group, however Panama will not let this happen easily. Another loss for Panama could mean the end of their tournament and be a huge disappointment.
In the game against Guadeloupe the Panama team fell behind fast thanks to a goal from Loic Loval and seemed out of place against the face Gwada Boys. Although Panama was able to bounce back thanks to a late goal from Nelson Barahona they were unable to get anything else past Guadeloupe goaltender Marius Fausta and eventually lost by a score of 1-2. The match was an aggressive one to say the least as there was a lot of rough play, fouls and quite a few challenges from both sides. While they came close to scoring a few times they missed their opportunities to finish and while need to play much better in their game against Mexico.
Mexico came out storming in the tournament and look like the clear favorites to make it all the way to the finals, along with the USA. They gently put away the team from Nicaragua by a score of 2-0 and dominated the play for the entire game. They will need to be at their best though in order to compete with an impressive team from Panama. A win from Mexico would set them up perfectly to head into the quarterfinals but a loss could force them into a very tough spot. Both teams will have to be at their best and it will prove to be a very exciting game to watch.
