The word heated is probably what best describes the recent match up between Panama and Mexico in the 2009 Gold Cup. There was a 12 minute delay while the two teams yelled, pushed, and shoved on Thursday and not even all the fighting could lead to a winner. Mexico and Panama tied 1-1 which makes their next games on Sunday, July 12th very crucial. Panama needs to take down Nicaragua and should be able to without a problem. Nicaragua has been unable to get anything going so far in this tournament and barring a miracle their Gold Cup experience will end on Sunday, July 12th, no matter the outcome.
While Panama’s tie with Mexico did nothing to help them move to the quarterfinals, the game did ensure that Guadeloupe, the United States and Canada will all be a part of the next round. The Mexican manager was ejected in the game, there were two red cards and backlash from the fans overshadowed the goals from Mexico’s Miguel Sabah and Panama’s Blas Perez.
All in all it showed that Panama is not going away in this tournament without a fight. They need to come out strong against Nicaragua and hope that Guadeloupe can defeat Mexico if they want to stick around in the tournament. You can watch both of the games right here on OleOleFootball as the first round of the Gold Cup wraps up on Sunday, July 12th. Nicaragua is sure to want to prove that they can compete and would love nothing more than to play spoiler in the match up and send Panama packing.
