The USA came into the 2009 Gold Cup as one of the favorites and did as everyone was expected and came out storming in their first game. On the other side of the ball, Honduras came up with a hard earned victory against Haiti and would look to surprise the world with a victory against the USA on Wednesday, July 8th.
In their first game of the tournament the USA came out quick and fast and put away Grenada by a score of 4-0. Charlie Davies, Robbie Rogers, Stuart Holden and Freddy Adu all scored for the team as they somewhat made Grenada out of place in the CONCACAF tournament. They should be the heavy favorites as they take on Honduras and look to pave the way to another Gold Cup championship.
Honduras was outplayed by Haiti in a number of areas in their first game of the tournament, but still managed to squeak by with a victory. Their road to the next round will only get tougher starting on Wednesday as they will be heavy underdogs against the USA. Coach Reynaldo Rueda is preparing his team as well as he can and the team has to be happy by starting the tournament out on the right foot. A lot of pressure will be put on striker Carlo Costly to come up big for the team the same way he did in the game against Haiti.
