In their first game, Egypt participated in an exciting encounter against the samba men of Brazil. Despite eventually losing the game to a last minute penalty, Egypt gave a very good account of themselves and made the football world sit up and notice. Despite falling behind to a fifth minute goal, which could have opened the floodgates, the Egyptians managed to equalise fairly soon after. They conceded a further two goals though in the first half to go in at half time losing 3-1.

Most people thought that was the end of Egypt in the match, but they themselves had other ideas and two goals in the space of a minute threw the game on its head. At 3-3 the game looked bound for a great 3-3 draw but unfortunately for the Egyptians a last minute goal-bound strike by Brazil was stopped on the line by the hand of Ahmed Al Muhamadi. A penalty was the decision and a red card for the offender meant that Brazil netted the winning goal to secure a 4-3 victory.

Italy struggled to see off the challenge of ten-man United States, who, despite being a man short from the first half due to the sending off of Ricardo Clarke for a cynical foul, managed to take the lead and go in at half time 1-0 up. The number difference was evident in the second half though when the Italians upped their game and managed to eventually secure victory by 3-1.
