The team’s first games couldn’t have been more contrasting. While Iraq played out a rather dull 0-0 draw with South Africa in the early kick off, Spain annihilated New Zealand in the later game, winning the contest 5-0.
Spain cemented their position as the pre-tournament favourites with an exhilarating display of football against the hapless New Zealand. They were 4-0 up by the 24th minute, with Liverpool superstar Fernando Torres grabbing a hatrick within the first seventeen minutes of the encounter. The Spaniards were sublime in the opening half and when Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas scored the fourth in the 24th minute, most people were scrambling for the record books as an imminent avalanche looked probable. However, as is normally the case in these situations, the team who scored all the early goals invariably takes their foot of the gas, and this is exactly what happened with the Spanish.
The New Zealanders held out until half time without conceding another goal, and despite a David Villa goal at the start of the second half, held their own for the rest of the game and didn’t concede another.
Iraq played hosts South Africa in their first game, and it turned out to be a boring 0-0draw. Both teams were wary of each other and the affect of this was a cagey game with no real excitement for the fans. If anything, the 0-0 draw proved that despite New Zealand’s thumping by Spain, Iraq, South Africa and New Zealand all have a sporting chance of making it through to the semi finals.
