Spain suffered one of the shocks of the last few years when they were defeated by the United States in the semi finals. Spain and South Africa clash on Saturday evening in the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein for their last group match before the semi final stage of the Confederations Cup. While Spain are assured qualification to the semi finals, South Africa still have a bit of work to do. Spain defeated a resilient Iraqi team in their last game by 1-0 and this was enough to see them progress. David Villa popped up with the winner on thirty minutes with a delightful header. The Iraq team nearly took a shook lead early on in the game, but then settled down to defend against a Spanish side that knocked five past New Zealand. The fact that the score remained at 1-0 until the final whistle is testament to the resolute defending of the Asian champions, who, depending on how Spain and South Africa get on in their match, still have an outside chance of qualifying for the semis.

South Africa beat New Zealand 2-0 in their second game and remain favourites to claim the second qualification spot from the group. They dominated New Zealand and missed a hatful of chances for an even bigger score. This could come back to haunt them though as goal difference could come into play should they lose to Spain and Iraq beats New Zealand. A heavy defeat to Spain by South Africa, and a win by Iraq could still see the Iraqis qualify instead of the hosts.
