Finland has already lost its place in the tournament, after two successive losses. One of those was to England and one to Germany. In the Germany game, the Finns were able to hold off Germany for the first fifty minutes or so, but then their defense seemed to crumble in the second half and the Germans scored twice in less than five minutes. Those goals, made by Benekikt Howedes and Ashkan Dejegah were able to put Germany in the semis. Markku Kanerva was upset by the result against Germany and said that his team will need to defend better from set-pieces if they want to have a victory against Spain in their final game of the season.

Spain is suffering from a bout of depression as well, having just lost against England on Thursday. The game ended 2-0, and while Spain had been favorites to win that game they weren't able to get up the momentum to do so. This took a toll, as it seriously hurt their tournament standings and will make it more difficult to make it to the finals. Goalkeeper Asenjo was responsible for the saves that kept the point spread from being higher than the 2-0 to ended on, but wasn't able to stop the attacks from Fraizer Campbell and James Milner.
