Two of the European under 21 Championship favourites Spain and Germany meet in the second game of the tournament on Monday. The Spanish under-21’s are hoping to emulate their senior rivals by becoming European champions. They will go into this tournament with high confidence after winning all their qualifying games; they defeated Poland, Russia and Kazakhstan in that qualifying campaign

However they nearly slipped up in their play-off with Switzerland, after losing the first leg 2-1 in Switzerland it took a dramatic late Sisi equaliser in the second leg to take the game into extra time. Raul Garcia sent the Spaniards through with an extra time winner, but they now know that they need to be careful of complacency.

In the group stages Germany beat Northern Ireland, Israel, Luxembourg and Moldova, but also suffered a shock defeat at the hands in Moldova.

Germany also have highly rated players among their number including Monchengladbach midfielder Marko Marin and Stuttgart’s talented Sami Khedira. They also have one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers in Europe in the shape of Schalke’s Manuel Neuer, who has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich.
